Aurora Wasteland Flash Fiction from Instagram…
A flash fiction inspired by the below Instagram image.
Lake Athabasca is the largest body of water in the province of Alberta and the second deepest after the Brightness Falls lake. Originally when first discovered by explorers from Europe the lake was found to have gold deposits along the north shore. Mines and settlements were settled by those hoping to find their fortune in the waters. After an unknown incident, all mines for the lake were abandoned. No one from the settlements was seen living again. Their bodies however washed up below the ice the following winter. Occasionally making themselves visible to ice fishermen in the area. At the time it was decided to leave the bodies until the spring thaw, but when spring came the bodies were gone. The lake was searched and none were found, that is until the next winter where again the bodies could be seen below the ice. The cycle has continued to this day. The bodies of the dead men from the mine can be found floating just below the surface of the lake ice every winter, and cannot be found at all during the summer.
